The same is true in the visual
arts. We tend to put emphasis on external worldly objects
in the painting but experienced artists and research
have found that turning our attention to the ‘space
within’, that neglected and rather unknown place,
can help set a work of art just right. “If care
and attention are lavished on the negative spaces, the
forms will take care of themselves.” Says Betty
Edwards, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain.
Young children are amazingly
‘more able’ to see this holistic or global
view of the world where everything is important, including
the spaces of sky, ground and air. Indeed, some of their
paintings can be compared with famous artists.
However, as adolescence creeps
in, this ability tends to lapse perhaps due to increasing
dominance of the language system, our ego and the left
hemisphere’s penchant for logically recognizing,
naming and categorizing objects. Not everything is given
the same importance anymore.
Art & Self Management restores
this innate ability to see things for what they really
are again. Learning to draw and paint holds the ingredients
needed to lead a better life. Being creative gives people
a sense of freedom and many things learned in producing
a work of art can be applied in everyday life.
These classes unfold this exciting
mystery.
